AUSTIN, Texas- A new hub for care and healing has come to Eastern Travis County, as Central Health’s Del Valle Health & Wellness Center officially opened in March.
The newest clinic in Central Health’s growing list of facilities offers an array of much-needed services including primary care and dental care. Behavioral Health is coming soon.
“Access to health care isn’t a privilege—it’s a fundamental right. The people of Del Valle deserve a facility closer to home that truly meets their needs,” said Ann Kitchen, chair of the Central Health Board of Managers. “Del Valle and East Travis County have long been among the most underserved areas in our community. Years ago, our board listened carefully to residents and made a firm commitment to expand health care access in this region. Thanks to their invaluable input and the generous support of Travis County taxpayers, we’re now making a meaningful difference in the daily lives and well-being of everyone who calls this community home.”
Located at 7050 Elroy Road, the Central Health Del Valle Health & Wellness Center’s 18,900 square-foot building features expanded clinical services including family medicine, pediatrics, and women’s health, as well as a retail and drive-through pharmacy. It is expected to annually serve more than 20,000 residents in Eastern Travis County. CommUnityCare Health Centers, Central Health’s affiliated Federally Qualified Health Center, will provide comprehensive, patient-driven primary care for the Del Valle community.
Like many other residents of Del Valle and in neighboring communities, Del Valle resident Miguel Martinez was commuting up to 30 minutes for health care appointments made elsewhere in Travis County. Now, he says, that commute is cut in half with the opening of the Del Valle Health & Wellness Center.
“It’s going to help me a lot for my situation,” Martinez said while waiting for an appointment recently at the facility. “For me, it’s more comfortable.”
“This new health center in Del Valle represents a crucial expansion in access for medical, dental and pharmacy services for the un- and under-insured,” said Dr. Nicholas Yagoda, CommUnityCare interim CEO. “The work however does not stop here. We’re expanding health care beyond buildings, bringing vital services directly to those who need them most. Through innovations like expanded telehealth services, we’re eliminating barriers to care and transforming homes and workplaces into access points for quality health care, meeting patients exactly where they are.”
As Travis County’s public hospital district, Central Health is building a comprehensive system of care for people with low-income including those pushed to the edges of the county. Del Valle, classified as a food desert by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, still is without a grocery store and lacks basic access to fresh food. Chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension were two of most prevalent health issues in the region, at rates exceeding the average in Travis County.
“I think we’re going to have a huge impact,” said Dr. Amanda Waterman, a CommUnityCare primary care physician at the Del Valle Health & Wellness Center. “This is an area that doesn’t have a lot of clinics. We’re happy to offer care every day of the week.”
The Del Valle Health & Wellness Center is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and pharmacy hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Expanding Health Care Throughout Travis County
The Del Valle Health & Wellness Center marks the second of four new health centers planned for historically underserved areas of Travis County. This strategic expansion began with the Hornsby Bend Health & Wellness Center, which opened its doors in 2023.
Looking ahead, the Colony Park facility in Northeast Austin is scheduled to welcome patients in 2027. That same year, the Hancock development will debut, offering nearly 200,000 square feet of clinical and administrative space for the Central Health system, which encompasses both CommUnityCare and Sendero Health Plans.
